The Vitex Experiment: Month One

image
If you have not read about my experiment with Vitex yet and want to learn more click here.

I started this experiment after reading all about Vitex and hoping it would help regulate my hormones as my body goes through its postpartum phase.

Since I couldn’t find anything conclusive about dosing I decided to go with two a day. I did that for two weeks. I noticed no change in the amount of breastmilk I was producing and no change in my mood.

I had read that while smaller doses increase your breastmilk production, larger doses can hinder it, but I decided to go all in.

So, for the next two weeks I decided to go up to three a day. I have been taking three 400mg capsules a day for three weeks now. So far I have not noticed any change in my breastmilk production (good or bad), but I do feel that my mood has levelled out a bit. I also noticed that all my signs of returning fertility (ie menstrual cycle signs) have vanished.

What does this mean?

Well, firstly I have read that it takes about three months for the Vitex to build up in your system to see results so I know it is early.

Second, I also know that whether I like it or not, there could be some placebo effect going on.

But, so far, I do feel like it is helping me (just slightly). Since it is not making things worse, and slightly better is still better than nothing, I plan to continue taking it.

I went out and bought my second bottle last week. Since I used a coupon it only cost me $8, which is a small price to pay for sanity. 🙂

I’ll check back in next month and let you know how it goes. Hopefully in three months I will be able to provide some useful information to women in similar situations.

If you have a Vitex experience of your own you would like to share, please do. But not those lame I knew a friend of a friend… LOL

    • It didn’t mess with my milk at all. In fact, people take it to help them make more.milk, so I figured hey, it can only help (I did read it can decrease your supply in very high doses). Not planning to.wean at all. I figure it will happen when it happens. Now that they are eating solid foods they don’t nurse much anyways.

    • Thanks for the Vitex input. I have read about taking it for TTC. Wouldn’t have helped me though LOL

  2. I must have missed your first post. I have not heard of nor used vitex. I have been privately using a supplement for women’s health made by Gaia and I am very happy with it so far.

    • Well so far the mood swings have disappeared so I am happy. I can’t really say for sure that it is the Vitex though, but I can’t see why they would go away on their own since I am still nursing and have no AF. I also take prenatal vitamins and vitamin d. I used to be a vitamin junkie (zinc, b12, b6, dhea etc.) but since I am not TTC right now, I have cut way back. I have heard good things about Gaia. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
