Baby Milestones: The Girls At 12 Months Old

Where will your baby be at 12 months old?  While all babies are different (including my twins!) here is where the girls are right now.

Food: eating some solid foods like pasta , cookies, banana and (adult) cereal.  Still eats a lot of pureed baby food and drinks non iron-fortified formula. She can also drink through a straw already so we give her some prune juice to help her poop.

Sleep: Goes to bed at 9:00pm and sleeps until about 8:00pm.  Sleeps almost through the night, only wakes up occasionally. Drinks 500ml-1000ml per night of formula. She naps once a day, usually for an hour or so.

Size: She is BIG, especially for a twin.  She weighs close to 30lbs and is almost in size 6 diapers and either 18-24 or 2T clothes.  I am not sure how tall she is but she is several inches taller than Sansa when she is standing up.  She has thinned out a bit from when she was younger, but she is definitely full-figured.

Vocabulary:  She squawks a lot.  Her favourite word is daddy or daddy.  She can say all the usual stuff like mama, dada, baba (bottle), nana, dog, hi, and a few others.

Temperment: She definitely has a personality.  She loves to smile, and makes the funniest faces.  She will always laugh if you put something on her head and loves having her picture taken.  She is also stubborn like mom, and will cry when she doesn’t get her way, and even hurl toys!  I tell her she’s a big bully (lovingly of course) because she is always taking things off of her sister like her bottle when she’s eating or her toy when they are in the car.

The girls trying to feed themselves.

Movement: She is not walking yet.  She can almost pull herself up into a standing position, but not quite.  If you stand her up she can stay that way for a while.  She doesn’t crawl, rather she scoots along on her bum.  She can feed herself her own bottle as well as feed herself tiny pieces of food (like baby puffs).  She is also very good at playing catch.  She can “catch” the ball if you roll it to her and actually throw it back to you!

Food: is somewhat of a fussy eater.  Does not like as many foods as her sister (i.e.. yoghurt, humus, mashed potatoes).  But, if you are eating it, she wants it!  She will stand up in front of you like a baby bird with her mouth open waiting to get some. LOL  She still drinks formula and eats a lot of purees/baby type foods as well.

Sleep: Goes to bed at 9:00pm and sleeps until about 8:00pm.  Sleeps almost through the night, only wakes up occasionally. Drinks 500ml-750ml per night of formula.  She only naps once a day.

Size: She is a very lean baby.  She weighs about 25-26lbs and just started wearing size 5 diapers and either 12-18 or 18-24 in clothes.  She is the smallest size of all my kids by far (but she is so cute with her blonde hair, blue eyes, one dimple and lashes for miles I know I am in trouble).

Vocabulary:  She talks a lot.  She will have entire non-sensical conversations with you, full of garbled words and pitch intonations.  She will crawl around the house and pick up things and then look at you and ask, “what id dat?”  When she is eating she will also take her food and say “I eat dat” or “I like dat”. Just yesterday when I was tickling her she surprised me because when I stopped she looked at me and yelled “again!” and continued saying it every time I would stop.

Temperment: She is a really easy-going baby, who only cries if there is something wrong.  She is super active and has no fear.  She is always curious and wanting to go places or do things she shouldn’t.  And while she screams bloody murder when you give her a bath, her (and June’s) favourite thing is to play in the dog’s water dish.  She also loves to play with her brother.  The will spend a half hour crawling in circles giggling and chasing each other.

Movement: She is almost walking.  She can stand unassisted, and is at the stage where she walks around the house using objects as walkers to keep her stable.  She still crawls and is really quick at it.  She also likes to get the remote and change the channels on the TV.  And she knows what she is doing because as soon as she presses the buttons she looks right at the TV screen waiting for the station to change (and if it doesn’t she gets upset).

Overall: While they are both still babies, they are growing up fast.  I am really looking forward to summer when the weather is nice and they will be walking and able to go out and play. Compared to my son, I they have been hitting milestones a lot sooner (like drinking with a straw, throwing a ball and talking).  Part of it may be because they are girls, and girls and boys develop differently.  I do think a big part is due having an older brother to learn from.  He is always trying to teach them how to do new things and they seem to really respond to it.

One year down, seventeen more to go!

    • It’s crazy! I look at them side by side and they look like cousins who are six months apart in age. June is that much bigger than Sansa! Not to mention they do have a male cousin who is six months younger who looks just like Sansa and Sawyer than June does (my husband’s genes are very strong) lol. Thanks for reading πŸ™‚

  2. They look adorable! I just read your post about iron fortified milk and I cant believe I never saw the connection before! I had a hard time with number 2 when I was pregnant because I was taking iron supplements. My toddler did too when we started her on formula. Good to know!

  3. They are such cuties πŸ™‚ And it’s so interesting to hear what different babies are doing at a year and think about what my eight-month-olds will be doing next! Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks. I think it also shows how different babies are. I mean they are so different and they are twins. That’s why is good not to compare your kids to others too much. It all evens out in the end. Enjoy 8 months. That was when I started working again part time and I started weaning at nine months. Memories lol
