Being a busy working mom leaves little time for a gal to exercise. Following my own advice that I can’t be a good mom unless I take care of myself too, I have decided I am going to start riding a bike to work. Eeeek!
Everyone needs an outlet. Lately, I feel like I am going crazy, I really want to start working out again, but with no time to go to a gym, I am getting really frustrated. I have always found a way to work exercise into my daily life, but unfortunately my job is not as active as it used to be and dog walks are shorter now with three kids and tow. So I have decided to step up and buy a bike.
Before I got pregnant with the twins I used to Rollerblade to work. I love rollerblading. I have a great pair that I have had for over ten years and they are like a part of me. It was about 9 km each way and the commute took about an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half depending on weather etc. I love rollerblading because I feel it is safer than riding a bike. You can do it on the sidewalk, and if you get too tired, you take them off and hop on a bus. Also, since you take them with you, there is no worry about theft (even with two locks I have had a bike stolen).
Exercising before work is great because you have so much energy and you feel better throughout the whole day. Going home, you get to exercise away the stress of the day and by the time you get home at night you are content and ready to be present with your family. Plus, since you are burning more calories you can eat more, which is good for me since I basically have to eat nothing to stay slim and I know that’s not healthy.
Now, I live too far to Rollerblade (19-20 km depending on route), and while I have considered bike riding in the past, the problem is it’s mostly downhill going to work, but uphill all the way home. Plus, especially at the beginning I will not have it in me to ride both ways, and since I commute during rush hour I cannot take a bike on the transit. Yesterday I saw I colleague riding her bike to work in the snow in -17 degrees with the windchill and I thought to myself, if she can do it, so can I!
So, I did some research and discovered a great option. An E-Bike. If you were like me and don’t know much about them, here’s the rundown. They are bikes that are battery-powered. The one I am looking at specifically can travel up to 30km per hour, runs on a lithium-ion battery that takes 2-4 hours to charge and can go up to 48km between charges. It has three options, you can pedal it like a bike, you can ride it like a scooter, or you can use pedal assist, which means you are pedalling but the bike is helping you. This way, I could ride to work, and then use the pedal assist to ride home, or if I am tired, just let the bike do all the work.
I was torn for a minute, because there are versions that look like little scooters and are they ever cute! But then I realized, the whole point of this was to get in shape, and really no one ever pedals those (they weight 100-150lbs.) you just ride them, and that would defeat the purpose. Maybe if I really enjoy my bike, I could look at getting one of those in the future.
I am so excited! Mama has a new hobby all her own. I am going to be a cyclist. I am so excited to get a new bike ( I haven’t owned a bicycle since 2005) and to customize it and ride it… Plus, think of all the money I will save on gas. And since my commute will now take all the time I have allotted I won’t be temped to kill time before going home by popping into the shops and inadvertently spending money.
Since it’s still only February, I have a bit of time. I think riding by April 1st is my goal, but we will see what the weather is like over the next six weeks. In the meantime, I plan to visit the local bike shop to learn all about ebikes and decide which one I will purchase.
I will be updating you on how this goes, but I really want to change my life for the better and get healthy both mentally and physically and for me, that means pushing myself to the limits.
