The Thursday Review: L’Oréal Root Cover Up

image

As you know I can never resist trying new hair products and when I saw this is seemed almost too good to be true so I had to give it a try. Note: This review is completely unbiased and not sponsored in any way.

As you may know I am a natural blonde. While I don’t have to worry about greys I have recently been dying my hair dark brown black which means that when my roots grow in I too suffer from the dreaded “skunk line” (light roots in dark hair).  Since I try not to colour my hair anymore than every four weeks it can be a problem.

I have tried using root touch up dyes but they can be messy, I am still colouring my hair and causing damage, and they cost as much as a full box of hair colour, so when I saw this no fuss root cover up I thought that it could be exactly what I have been needing.

It comes in a little can which doesn’t seem like much for the price. I found it from $18.99 at the drugstore to $12.99 at the Superstore but I was able to get it on sale for $9.99 which I fel was reasonable if I could get a few uses out of it.

The product states that it lasts for one wash and that you can spray it on and go. For the record, I bought it in the black colour.

Day 1: So of course even though it said to hold it 10cm away, I held it too close and got a bit of a spot but then I backed up and got better coverage. The spray itself didn’t really have a scent but it did cover pretty well. Just for the heck of it, I also tried it on my faded ends which worked but it made a bit of a mess. The bonus was that after getting black on my hands and fingernails it washed off easily (thank goodness!) In a few seconds, I had noticeably darker roots and I was good to go…ish (see cons).

Day 2: I am happy to report that the colour is still there and looking good. I was a little scared of having a black pillow but even sweating did not make the colour run out. As for the yucky well it is a bit better I guess but since my hair is now just dirty it’s kinda hard to tell.

Day 3: Washing day.image

The good news was that when I wet my hair the colour did not come out immediately which is good if you are caught in the rain. After some shampoo it was black everywhere and gone it was. When I dried my hair though the dot was still there! I guess I will really need to get more practice spraying lol.

PROS:
-really quick and easy
-no awful smell
-product can be used more than once
-available in 6 colours
-does not damage your hair
-easy clean up

CONS:
-kinda pricey
-only 6 colours
-only lasts one shampoo
-takes some practice to get it to go on evenly
-it left my hair feeling yucky and dirty which I did not like at all

OVERALL:
YES. I would recommend this product for a quick root touch up especially if you have problems with greys and you get it for a good price. It works, it’s pretty much foolproof and as long as you stick to your roots it shouldn’t make your hair feel too yucky (I say yucky because I am not sure how to describe it, not greasy but not sticky or stiff just yucky). And with the dark colours the easy clean up is great.

As long as I have black hair I will definitely keep this on hand.

So what do you think? Would you try this? Have you tried it and if so what do you think? Please share in the comments below.
